課程概述 |
Course Description:
Survey of major American poetry beginning with 19th c. Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. Read and discuss some of the finest subsequent Am. poetry from early to mid-20th c. ending with the work of Theodore Roethke. The second semester course will take us from Randall Jarrell to late 20th c. Approach will be on this poetry's value as literary art rather than theory. |

Course Objectives:
Learn and discuss the phenomena of art and literature, literary aesthetics, form, terminology, and meaning. Gain insight to values and cultural details of contemporary American thought and life. Explore breadth and wealth of English language, probing vocabulary, cadence, metaphor, idiom, etymology, connotation, subtextual reference, etc. |

Requirements:
Fairly high English reading ability. Interest in literature, especially poetry, as an aesthetic art form. |

Assigned Readings:
Custom handouts, distributed in class, from which selected poems will be emphasized for the following week's discussion. Marginal glossaries to assist reading. Other handouts as needed. Attendance at selected viewings of film material on the poets and their work.
